Wind Overlay
The Nova Scotia Wind Atlas is a project of the Nova Scotia Department of Energy developed in a partnership with the K.C. Irving Chair in Sustainable Development at the Université de Moncton and the Applied Geomatics Research Group at the Nova Scotia Community College.
Google-based maps represent average wind speed estimates at 30 m, 50 m, and 80 m above ground.
Wind maps have a resolution of 200 m; color corresponds to wind speed.
NOTE: Estimates at any location should be confirmed by measurement. Authors not responsible for the use of the map.
Wind resource maps are also available in PDF form.
The Controls page provides a number of ways to interact with the wind atlas map
Overlay Transparency
The transparency slidebar allows you to fade the mapped wind speeds on and off and thus permit you to control your viewing of the wind speeds and the underlying Map / Satellite / Hybrid information. Use your cursor to slide the control left and right.
Height
You can choose which of the resulting wind maps (i.e. 30 m, 50 m, or 80 m) you want to look at by simply selecting the desired height with your cursor.
Look up an address
When you type in an address or a place name and press the Go! button the map will zoom to that location. This gives you a quick means of locating a particular area of interest.
Hide Sidebar
Click on the Hide Sidebar button and the sidebar display will toggle on and off. This allows you to gain a larger view of the map information.
Using the Cursor
When your cursor is on the map you can hold down the left mouse button and pan around the mapped locations. You can also use the left mouse button to click on the wind speed map and a popup text window will display the wind speed value at that particular location.
